Rehabilitation of Ontario's Aggregate Pits & Quarries
Progressive rehabilitation is required by law in Ontario, by the Aggregate Resources
Act. Here is what is actually happening:
- For every two hectares of land newly excavated, less than one is rehabilitated
- In the last decade (1992-2001) Ontario's aggregate pits & quarries have
excavated an additional 5,948 hectares (size of 10,000 football fields) that
has not rehabilitated.
The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has been requested, under
the Environmental Bill of Rights, to review why rehabilitation is not
being done. See
Request for MNR Review. Good News!! The government has agree to carry out our request to review the status of rehabilitation of gravel pits/quarries in Ontario.
